European Digital Library struggles with copyright
[W]orks being digitalised for the library will mainly be from before the 1920s unless the issue of intellectual property rights is dealt with. „This is one of the main topics in all discussions going on at the moment,“ says Britta Woldering of Deutsche Nationalbibliothek and CENL – a group of national librarians. „The issue of copyright is the biggest barrier for digitalisation,“ she said [in the EU Observer].

She reminds us on the weak position of an OPL hospital librarian if she wants the hospital IT department to do something for the library. It’s a sometimes sad story of not paying attention to such a „minor“ institution at all but Krafty encourage us not to give up the fight.

Immer mehr Forscher tauschen ihre Aufsätze im Internet aus. Bei de Gruyter hat man das spät erkannt, immerhin gibt jetzt es den „Pschyrembel“, ein Standardwerk der Medizin, und etliche Zeitschriften online. Aber was, wenn das Internet die papierenen Bibliografien und Nachschlagwerke des Saur-Verlages überflüssig macht? Dann hätte sich de Gruyter einen Klotz ans Bein gebunden.
